TEA Party: Rhetoric is Easy…Action is Hard

On April 15 in New Jersey and across the country, there were "TEA parties" where citizens who were "mad as hell and not going to take it any more" gathered to let the government know they've had enough. They had banners and placards reading "Stop Rewarding Bad Behavior" or "Change…It's all that's left in my pocket," and of course, "TEA" which stands for "Taxed Enough Already."

Clearly, people in New Jersey are angry. The question is, what do you do with that anger? Who do you direct it toward? Who do you blame for our economic situation? If you've lost your job, you've got to be able to vent and tell the politicians you've "had enough." And if you are having a hard time finding work, it's pretty convenient to hold up a sign and chant "no tax money for illegal aliens."

I understand the frustration. I understand the anger. I am angry and frustrated when I see grotesque federal government bailouts of AIG and other bad corporate players who have done the wrong thing and now are begging the federal government to come in and rescue them. The feds are rescuing the auto industry, which continues to pay the price for years of negotiating overly generous deals with the labor unions. Countless banks are bordering on closing their doors unless the government keeps propping them up and keeping them on life support.

Many angry folks in New Jersey and across the country are saying that government has screwed things up so badly that it is time for some sort of revolt. That's why signs like "Clean House in 2010" resonated on such a visceral level. I also noticed that at some of the New Jersey TEA rallies, Republican candidates for governor like Chris Christie and Steve Lonegan were there to throw out some choice red meat to the throngs. Lonegan said, "How about we cut the size of government and take back America?" Christie railed against high taxes. Countless other speakers got up to microphones at dozens of locations across the state to say, "enough is enough."

But while I understand the anger and frustration, here is the catch. Railing and complaining about government spending is one thing; but actually doing something about it is quite another. I noticed, and I am wondering if it is just a coincidence, why is it that no one that spoke at all these TEA rallies railed against the ridiculously expensive and administratively cumbersome property tax rebate program in New Jersey? Clearly, the state can't afford it. Isn't it "pork" to send checks to tax payers with the names of politicians on them trying to score a few cheap points at election time? Obviously, it is.

But, while speaker after speaker at these TEA rallies dumped on the so-called "pork" in the Obama Stimulus Package, none of them criticized the pork that they were getting in these property tax rebate checks. So, I guess what one man sees as pork, another man perceives to be his reward from the government. When the government came in to bail out certain financial giants on Wall Street, I didn't love it, but it stopped the Stock Market from totally tanking and kept us from losing even more in our 401Ks.

When people have a flood in their community, they want FEMA to come in and bail them out. When people want to send their kid to college, they are looking for government sponsored loans, or better yet, grants, to make it more affordable. And what about municipal aid? When Corzine proposed cutting municipal aid (you might just call that pork going from one level of government to another) people went nuts. They were smart enough to know that.

These same TEA party protesters are smart enough to understand that if state government cuts back on municipal and school aid, this will mean higher property taxes for them. Well, why is that pork okay? Is it because the people at the TEA party benefit from it? So, let me get this straight. Pork is bad unless the people at the TEA party are eating the pork that they're going to wash down later with all that extra tea.

Well, like I said, I get the anger, and the rhetoric is easy. But it is a hell of a lot harder when the rubber actually meets the road and you start asking people to look in the mirror to figure out how fat they've become by eating so much pork that comes from, yes, government. I hate to say it, but is Social Security pork? I don't know; ask somebody who is living on it just to say alive. Is Medicare pork? You tell me. When the government builds a road to prop up the local economy in your town, is that pork or do you call it "economic development?"

I get the anger; but screaming, yelling and pandering is a piece of cake. Balancing a budget and getting things done is not quite so easy. I'm sure that argument will go over real well with the revelers at this week's TEA party.

This is the most insipid reasoning I have encountered since junior high. The "revelers" as you call them, are your neighbors and fellow Americans. Their voices will be heard loud and clear from voting booths all across America. Of course, that's IF King B.O. PERMITS us to vote anymore.

Most people are smart enough to know the difference between pork and neccesary spending. But MSNBC wants to stereotype the people who attended the tea parties. Last night Olbermann had a guest, Garofalo, and they said the attendees were racisists. I voted for Obama and attended a tea party. I'm a democrat! I am a moderate though. I guess you have to be far left to not be a racist, according to Garofalo.

I say they both are idiots! And no wonder the ratings are sinking fast. I hope they sink even faster now.

No wonder the ratings are sinking fast. I hope you

This is the most stupid comments yet. You bet we are mad, all over this country, and the stupid left is starting to get scared. They better get scared. Now that the momentum has started, let us keep up the heat and turn it up a bit. Stay out of the movies of the people like Ron Howard that say we should have a Socialistic government, stay out of businesses that are far left. We can do it. Only buy American. Tell the government to stay out of our religion and homes.

I'm an old lady of 66 and to be called a threat to my government is a laugh, but it isn't funny. I put my life on the line for 20 years, and these idiots, took my pension down to 20% left. I'm suppose to be happy and pat them on the head and say, it's okay, you'll take care of me. When Hell freezes over. What I think they will try to do is, destroy me. Peacefully saying that we are fed up with you. It's time to remove the problems from our government. Using dirty words as "tea baggers" against us. How dare you. They don't get it. God Bless America. Stay out of my pocketbook.

Some people have book learning, but no common sense. Dr., my uncle. You know who he is for. and you can see why as of today NBC stock is down also.

It gets me, they just don't understand that we Americans are not stupid and we are finally at the end of the rope and fed up with lies, cheating, theft, and sneaky politics. The lies are the biggest thing for me because if you lie, you will steal and they have done both.

Another load of smoke and mirrors. I found MSNBC coverage of tea parties to be vulgar and offensive. Their credibility as a real news organization is gone. Report it, don't create it.

Just thought you might want to know why I switched channels permanently.

I did not attend a tea party. I will attend the next one now.

          Goodbye.

Wow, a whole 6 comments (now 7) from the whole country?? Where has MSNBC's viewers gone?? You said "When people want to send their kid to college, they are looking for government sponsored loans, or better yet, grants, to make it more affordable". Look at what making housing "MORE AFFORDABLE" did to the housing market. Housing prices skyrocketed because the government got involved in "HELPING MAKE HOUSING MORE AFFORDABLE". What has happened to the cost of higher education over the past years? It has skyrocketed as well. Get Uncle Sam out of the way and STOP HELPING MAKE EVERYTHING MORE AFFORDABLE!! That is just the governments way of taking more responsibility/control over our lives. I have a child at a university, for 2 classes it cost more than $2000.00. We got no help from anyone. It doesn't make it more affordable when the government pays part of the bill. It just causes someone else to pay. WAKE UP!!

The message was very clear: these people want NO new/increased taxes or fees. "Tea Party" on April 15th (date Federal tax returns due), plus thousands of hand-made signs - if Steve Adubato cannot figure this one out, then he should RETURN his Ph.D. ! !

I realize that these protesters are working and middle-class folks who are knowledgeable and truly sincere (as well as passionate) about this issue. Only profound ignorance can account for some claims that racism is the reason for opposition to tax increases and bigger government.

Senator Hillary Clinton correctly stated during the Bush administration that criticism of a sitting President is NOT unpatriotic. Neither is criticism of government or protest unpatriotic today.

The message of the protests was very clear: NO MORE TAXES. (The fact that it was written on thousands of signs might be a HINT . . .)

If Steve Adubato CANNOT understand this fact, then he should return his PhD. Instead of arguing the facts, Adubato resorts to name-calling. Whatever side of the issue one is on, we should ALL applaud this exercise of the rights of free speech and free assembly.

When Senator Hillary Clinton's patriotism was impugned by Bush administration officials, she correctly stated that criticism of a sitting President with whom you disagree is patriotism. Theodore Roosevelt wrote, "To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." James Madison wrote, "It is proper to take alarm at the first experiment on our liberties. You get the anger? Apparently, you don't. You're attitude is the same as the other media. I am at a loss to understand why these tea parties met with so much derision from the media. I didn't see any coverage of extreme acts or mass police arrests. What I saw was people coming together in their mutual frustration over the direction our country is headed. Why is that so hard to understand? People have reached the end of their rope. We are all tired of the disrespect the government has for us. We can send them our money but we better keep our mouths shut while we do it.

For me, the major issue is accountability and wasteful spending. The money would be there when needed for FEMA, or grants or municipal aid if they didn't waste so much on garbage spending. I am tired of the government thinking of me as some cash cow they can keep coming back to. I pay my fair share every year. And every year it gets harder to swallow the tax bill when I see the waste our politicians perpetuate. Obama promised no earmarks - yet he felt one more year of it was okay - to the tune of 10,160 individual earmarks? When there was already so much outrage over the bailouts he signed away $19.6 BILLION for pet projects? Some of them may be impotant but I'm supposed to be happy that Iowa got millions to study why pigs stink!!!! This is a CRISIS? And when I voice my objection I am painted as an extremist, a redneck, a radical, a racist? I have no right to be upset about the housing market mess? How many government administrations kept that program going? I should be happy with how much my investments have lost? I can't get upset because politicians aren't paying THEIR taxes? But I should be ever so grateful about my rebate check? Don't take it in the first place! And how much does it cost to run that program? My list goes go on and on .....

How dare the media & our elected officials act as though we taxpayers are unworthy of an opinion and have no right to express it. You broadcast the news in outrage over the lack of Democracy in foreign countries yet here in AMERICA you deride us? How dare you show disdain for what we still believe in - the principals this country was founded on. Remember "... A Government Of the People, By the People, For the People......" Both the media and the politicians have forgotten that. The government's shananigans have been exposed, we point it out, and we are the bad guys? Where has the logic gone in this country?
